Position/Title: Senior Web Developer

November 2002 - January 2009 Senior Web Developer - Portent Interactive

Portent Interactive is an Internet marketing company. I was hired as Senior Developer for ColdFusion projects. Some customers required long-term software development support. For the last two years I've been lead developer for Shoppingstand Inc, www.shoppingstandinc.com and its family of 6 web stores. I managed a team of HTML producers, was solely responsible for all back-end administration code (product catalog and order management) and ad-hoc SQLServer tasks for reporting and product changes required for special sales.

For many customers Portent was SEO consultant and I was required to quickly become familiar with customer's web servers & other systems used to produce their websites and to make recommendations or changes to their site to improve marketing position.

Experience while at Portent Interactive

  • Web Programming -- Cold Fusion 8 & below, Java, jsp, perl, ASP. HTML, XHTML, Javascript, jQuery, ajax.
  • Database -- SQL Server 2000 & 2005. DB Schema & index design. Scheduled & ad hoc reporting. Schema documentation and planning. Data import and export
  • Customer Support – Diagnosing problems from customer reports and system logs. Communicate with users to overcome any issues
  • Security Protocols -- protecting websites from all types of attack, modern and traditional.

Feb 2001 - Aug 2001 Lead Web Developer, Java/JSP/JDBC/Servlet development, Loudeye Technologies

Developed JSP/Servlet applications for company intranet. All JSP development was done in Tomcat. All projects used JDBC -- sometimes with WebLogics SQL drivers, sometimes with JSQLConnect drivers. I did all the programming for the first and third application.

My initial JSP application was for one-time-use to check-in audio CDs to see if they were to be returned to a customer or stored in the library. The application produced packing slips for boxes of CDs to be returned and updated locations in library database for those which were stored.

Second application presented a report of production numbers from a database with weekly summaries and project totals. This application used IIS and NT Login ID to identify users. It also used cookies to retain user preferences between sessions. The challenge in this application was to allow expanding/condensing weeks of numbers and remembering which weeks are condensed between user sessions.

This second application was a learning project for a junior programmer. I provided design guidance overall and some coding on the "hard parts." I worked as a mentor for the programmer who did the bulk of the coding But the junior programmers were laid off in April so my mentoring time ended.

The third JSP application was 20% completed and 60% planned when I left Loudeye. This was an Order entry/management application, built on an Apache/Tomcat platform. I developed the design document and database schema plan for this project.

Dec 1999 - Feb 2001 -- Lead Cold Fusion developer, Loudeye Technologies

A merger between Alive.com and Encoding.com brought many changes to my work environment. Encoding had the technology to digitize audio and video for various codecs. Alive had developers who could make use of the digitized media. The merged company was renamed Loudeye.

My Cold Fusion team was left intact. We now developed Cold Fusion internet applications around Loudeye's digital encoding. Promotional programs were done with web movie sites who had their members send video tapes to Loudeye where they would be digitized and made available on the internet through the host web site. My part in these projects was to continue developing CF custom tags as needed for these applications.

The Cold Fusion team was also responsible for two intranet applications. One was WBRaid, a bug tracking/resolution system that had been developed in the early days of Alive.com. Our CF team worked to change DBMS (from Access to SQL Server) and add features. My part in these changes was mostly as lead and mentor for junior programmer. The other major intranet application was Audio QC for the Loudeye audio digitizing labs. This website presented random lists of clips for review by an audio engineer. The QCApp was written in Cold Fusion, but it communicated with the queue of clips through an HTTP call to a JMS server running under WebLogics.

Except for our Cold Fusion group, Loudeye was a Java shop. After a year of being on the outside, I put together a training plan for our Cold Fusion group to learn J2EE and migrate to Java/JSP. There was a curriculum of online tutorials that were appropriate to the work we were doing, notes about prerequisites and learning objectives, and a schedule for us to move through the training. This training plan was also later found on the copy machine and adopted by other employees eager to work on their Java skills.

Sept 1999 - Dec 1999 -- Senior Cold Fusion developer, Alive.com

I left Boeing for a small (45 people) software firm in Pioneer Square. They had a shrinkwrapped product, Alive EShow, and were working to develop web capabilities similar to it. Alive EShow allows a user to "wrap a web site" around their streaming media content, audio or video.

My short time in this small group was pleasant. I began to learn their software development life cycle (there were no written procedures). I improved error processing of their existing custom tags. I began mentoring other Cold Fusion developers, teaching them performance and style tips.

Cold Fusion tags wrapped java servlets that were built by another team. The Cold Fusion tags were then used to build a number of internet applications like online yellow pages or promotional programs (upload your photos and make a slideshow).

Sept 1997 - Sept 1999 - Boeing Multimedia, Imaging and Information Retrieval Systems (MIIRS)

  • Web Development - As a member of a corporate computing support group (Boeing MIIRS) I have worked on many web projects in many capacities. Our group was entirely individual project websites where each analyst gathered requirements, designed and supported the system, and trained the end users. Our customers were other Boeing organizations. Our group encouraged a strong customer-centered support and maintained 100% headcount in a time when other groups had 15% cut backs.
  • SEI-CMM - Software Encoding Institute - Software Capability Maturity Model - I was a (voluntary) member of a six-person team which was working to develop procedures and tool sets to allow our work group (MIIRS) to be assessed SEI-CMM Level 2.

1990-1997 - Boeing Commercial Airplane Digital Information Systems CD-ROM (DISC) Project - Aircraft Maintenance Manuals on CD-ROM

  • I was a prime member of a team working to produce CD-ROM Maintenance manuals for all Boeing's in-production fleets.

I worked with industry technical teams to refine standards for SFQL (Full text extensions to SQL) and I worked with Boeing teams to produce an RFP and to evaulate proposal responses.

I represented Boeing as editor and author of the Data Schemas to the ATA (Air Transport Association) Technical Data Sub-committee on Interoperability Standards. These Data Schemas would allow Client/Server use of technical information by airlines and their service agencies.

Once a supplier was selected, I developed the test plan for the schemas and executed it for multiple pre-releases, two betas and a final release.

  • 1993-1995 - Web servers began to appear on many of Boeing's unix networks. I introduced my unix sys admins to web servers and taught myself how to use Perl CGI to access and present unix command line information through the early X-Windows web browser. I built many web tools for my working team's everyday use including an email filter that logged all correspondence between our team and our software contractor.

In 1994 I started a web page on a private internet provider. My site made PC Computing's top 1001 web sites of 1995.

1988-1990 - Boeing Multimedia, Imaging and Information Retrieval Systems (MIIRS) Hypertext research project

I was a member of a team of four who investigated the near-term possibilities of "hypertext" and offered demonstrations to any and all Boeing groups who would be in a position to benefit from the tools and technologies that would soon be available.

1984-1988 - Boeing Information Retrieval Technologies (IRT) Full-Text database design and development

I developed corporate full-text applications (Proposal support, contracts, policies & procedures) using BRS software on an IBM mainframe. I learned IBM JCL through installing and operating the retrieval software and building and managing the full text databases. I developed training curriculum for other analysts to build and manage databases.

1981-1983 - Boeing Atlas Fortran programmer

I converted portions of an engineering application for use on Cray super computer.
